THE 4TH ANNUAL MERKADO EXHIBITION
Statement
After four consecutive years, we have made our annual exhibition that has taken different shapes through the hand of artists, the view of visitors and the desire for the community as a unit.
Merkado tries to bring all together under the same umbrella; the variety of styles, disciplines, and cultural backgrounds are welcome to live the experience of sharing the artistic message with a world different from the one that usually revolves around it.
This is an excellent opportunity to see your work at the SpanicArt Pop-up Uno Tres unO.

DIRECTOR AND PLAYWRIGHT: HEBERT POLL GUTIÉRREZ CASTING DIRECTOR AND PRODUCER: ANNA SALAS PRODUCTION COMPANY: IMAGINANTES SC GENRE: SHORT ANIMATED FILM DURATION: 3 MINUTES AUDIENCE: ADULTS SYNOPSIS Through animated short films, the author, poet, playwright, and storyteller Hebert Poll Gutiérrez, a true son of Cuba, decides to use art once again to entertain, educate and transform realities. Cuba: are you really beautiful? does not criticize for the sake of criticizing. It is a revelation of that secret Cuba... that invisible Cuba that does not appear in the mass media. A beautiful land but plagued by social problems such as racial discrimination, police abuse, prostitution, psychological abuse, and bureaucracy, among other ills that affect Cuba today. Few issues escape from the author’s lens, who, from his humble place as a descendant of those black Africans, stands as a defender of the human values of the island where he was born. Artistic goals for this project: It will reveal the real Cuba. That Cuba doesn't appear in the newspapers. It will help erase the stereotypes that exist about Cubans and their traditions. It will tell the world that Cuba is not such a perfect country. DIRECTOR AND PLAYWRIGHT: HEBERT POLL GUTIÉRREZ PRODUCTION COMPANY: INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION GENRE: Short experimental theater play with graphic novel elements and sound effects. DURATION: 9 MINUTES AUDIENCE: GENERAL
SYNOPSIS Due to a terrible argument, there’s a fire in the forest. The characters in this story never agree with each other. Awa the duck and Akiko the roster doesn’t get along. Their silly feathered fight has lasted too long, affecting the animals, almost animals, and those who think of themselves as animals of the forest, the Ibo Findo. They only have one solution left... The protagonists of this story are animals with afro-descendant names. Expecting what must happen, it’s necessary to ask for help from the Afro-Cuban gods. Between fights and a bit of love, time passes until the day of the Great Race. The play is based on traditional Afro-Cuban legend, but it is not a 100 percent reproduction of this legend. The author decided to adapt this legend to contemporary contexts to be understood by children, young people, and adults who sometimes behave like children. The play is not a historical tale of the past but a modern cultural strategy to share and preserve the Afro-Cuban identity. The piece is full of contemporary nods and humor, starring divine beings (orishas) who live happily contaminated by the imperfections of human beings. Artistic objectives of this project: To show and share aspects of Afro-Cuban culture that only a few know about. To help eliminate stereotypes about Cubans and their traditions. To share the wisdom of Afro-Cuban culture. Why is this project important for the others involved? Through the project, we want to show that opening our minds to different ways of thinking in new cultures is not always bad. Learning to live in a community as the people we are is the basis of a healthy society. It is the basis of a healthy society. It is time to build cultural bridges, not walls. For the author of this project, The Great Race means defending his triple cultural identity: His identity as an artist, as a Cuban, and as an afro-descendant. Concept: Leaving home to pursue a dream overseas might sound like the "perfect" plan. But there is a certain darkness that comes with being an immigrant, which is below the surface. Not everyone talks about it. It is one of the hardest decisions, and it takes patience and effort. This is a tribute to all those immigrants out there, who are struggling emotionally, who don't seem to fit in, and most importantly those whose dreams are bigger than their fears!
